Reporting Abuse, Neglect, Extortion or Exploitation *

What is abuse?

Can be physical, sexual, or emotional.

  • PHYSICAL:  Contact or actions that cause injury or pain, such as hitting, pinching, yanking, shoving, pulling hair or dumping from chair
  • EMOTIONAL:  Threats, taunts, isolation, bullying or harassment
  • SEXUAL:  Any unwanted sexual contact without regard to injury, any unwanted action with sexual intent, any sexual activity with a person who is not able to understand or consent

What is neglect?

When someone is not assuring basic care such as food, water, medical help, medicine, shelter, safety or proper personal cleanliness.

What is extortion?

When someone takes a thing of value from an unwilling or reluctant adult by physical force, intimidation, or abuse of legal or official authority.

What is exploitation?

The misuse of a person’s money, services, property or power of attorney.

Use of restraints and seclusion

The use of seclusion and restraints, both physical and chemical, is a last resort for maintaining the safety of patients, visitors and treatment personnel, and should be utilized only when clearly indicated by a policy detailing specific criteria (Read Magellan’s full Position Statement).
